Hello coffee enthusiasts,
Today I would like to stray away from the coffee world for just a moment. Instead of discussing one of our menu items, or variations that we like to offer, I would like to focus in on a very important aspect of our business. That crucial piece of any small business is the staff. The staff here at BCB is truly unique, and we are very proud of the collection of employees we have been able to hire over the past few years. I’m not going to get into details about the members themselves, but simply share some outlining facts about or team. As much as they can make Laurel and I want to pull our hair out sometimes, they truly are the reason our company is where it is today.
For starters, we have three different types of staff members here at BCB. We have our “short-term help”, which are the employees that are pre-determined to be leaving us in a fairly short amount of time. Any employees that are only able to work a shift or two a week because of other obligations are added into this category. Second, we have our “Drifters”, who are typically here longer than the short-term help, but don’t necessarily have an interest in a life-long career in the coffee industry. These members are typically invested in school, a second job, or a different interest that they would like to pursue. Lastly, the third type is what I like to refer to as the “long-haulers”, because we’re anticipating that they will be invested in our business for a long time. These few individuals truly make a difference on a day-to-day basis when it comes to giving insight on decisions for our business. Overall I find it fascinating how necessary it is to have multiple staff members representing each of the groups at all times.
The reason it is so important to have a variety of different employees at all times is because of the nature of small business. It’s easy to think that any small business would kill for a staff full of long-haulers, because they are typically the most invested and motivated. The truth is the other two groups are equally as important because we will never have a need for a staff full of managers that want to make a living out of a job at BCB. The same obviously goes for the opposite situation where no small business owner wants a staff full of employees that aren’t invested for the long-term. Overall, a balance is key, and finding that balance all starts with fitting people to the roles they are looking for. Transparency during the interview process is truly the most important part of acquiring the perfect mix of employee types, and this variety is something that we here at BCB pride ourselves on.
We are truly grateful for every single member of our staff. It is a very humbling to know that we have an invested team that is willing to provide their services day in and day out to help make BCB the best it can possibly be. With that being said, finding like-minded staff members in a business like this is never easy. We are constantly searching for individuals who could be assets for our team.
