The Great Flavored Syrups Debate – BCBlog Editorial from the CBG

Hello coffee enthusiasts,

Today I would like to talk about flavored syrups in the coffee industry. There are a lot of different aspects to consider when it comes to choosing what flavored syrups to offer in a coffee shop, ranging from what brand to supply, all the way to how many different options to offer. Syrups are a fun way to mix up the options customers have to choose from, but can be done terribly wrong if not thought out well. We here at BCB pride ourselves on our limited selection and variety of syrup options, and the quality of syrups we choose to offer.

When it comes to what we decide to offer at BCB, the answer is pretty simple. After countless hours of research and testing, we found that Monin syrups are the best quality for us. Although they are a little more expensive than other options, Monin syrups are not as overpoweringly sweet, and have a better natural flavor profile. This difference of quality has lead to our ability to make some unique seasonal drink options at all times throughout the year. Before I get ahead of myself here, I’d like to first fill you guys in on what syrups we always have to offer.

No matter what time of the year it is, BCB always has the VIP six available. Those six syrup options are: Vanilla, Caramel, Hazelnut, Almond, Toasted Marshmallow, and Raspberry. We also always have the Sugar Free versions of Vanilla, Caramel, and Hazelnut ready to use as well. These six options were essentially decided upon by our customers. After cutting down to only offering Vanilla, Caramel, and Hazelnut, we found that the other three options were continually being requested, so we decided to add them in to the VIP list.

Some of you guys may be wondering why we felt the need to cut back on flavors in the first place. I mean, flavors are fun right? Some might think the more options the better. We found out pretty early on that instead of being excited about a large flavor list, a majority of customers felt overwhelmed by it. I’m sure you can even think back to a time in your life that you went to a coffee shop and instantly had a flash of anxiety when you first started looking at their extensive menu. So the question is, how could we keep our customers from feeling overwhelmed, while also getting to enjoy offering unique flavored drinks? About two years ago we had just the answer.

A Seasonal Flavor list. This concept gives customers the best of both worlds. We typically get two or three different flavors in every month or two that we use to make our seasonal drinks. These drinks are typically inspired by Holidays, but sometimes we like to offer drinks based off of what season we’re in. A few of the options we offer that are coming up in the near future are a Chocolate Covered Strawberry Latte, a Cherry Vanilla Latte, a Thin Mint Latte, a Pot of Gold Latte, and of course the Nutty Irishman Latte. All of these Holiday inspired drinks are made by mixing our VIP list with a few other options that we bring in like Strawberry or Irish Cream. This concept allows us to offer a variety of options without having to have a large inventory of syrups sitting around for years at a time.

Here at BCB, we’re very happy with the system we have in place for our syrup selection. With that being said, we’re also open to suggestion on what belongs in the VIP list. We encourage everyone to feel free to send us an email or Facebook message if you think one of our flavor varieties are just too good to see disappear after it’s season is over. I’m also a big fan of creativity, so if anyone has any ideas that would make an awesome new drink combination, send us a message about that as well. I can guarantee it will be experimented with if it hasn’t already. With our customers help, we can keep adjusting our flavor list to allow us to offer the best possible options.

Until next time,

-Your CBG
